A.R.T. FAQs

A.R.T. General FAQs
How soon will I get my order?
All orders go out within 7 to 10 business days. Once they are out the door, shipping times vary depending on the method of delivery (freight or UPS) and where you live. For more information, see the shipping section of the catalog.
Why do clay and glaze orders take longer to ship in the winter?
To avoid your clay and glaze arriving frozen, we do not ship clay and glaze orders during extremely cold times (below freezing). Glazes will be ruined if they freeze, and clay will require extra wedging when it thaws. You will be advised if your order will be delayed due to the weather.
Are the prices in the catalog current?
Most prices are current, however all prices are subject to change. Our vendors will sometimes change pricing during the year, and while we can sometimes absorb the change, we will generally have to change our prices as well. Unfortunately, we have no way of showing those changes until a new catalog is printed. If you send in an order, either by purchase order or credit card, you will be notified of any price changes before your order is processed.
If I have questions about using products purchased from you, is there technical assistance available?
Yes. Simply call our office at 262-884-4278 and ask to speak with the tech. If the tech is not available, leave a voice mail message or send an email to tech@artclay.com and your inquiry will be returned as soon as possible, usually the same day. If the tech cannot answer your questions, you will be provided contact with someone who can, such as the manufacturer of the product in question.
Which clay should I use for my project?
Refer to the "Choosing a Clay Body" section of our catalog (See page 3). It will guide you through the many choices you have in selecting a clay body that is appropriate for a specific project.
I need clay that is firmer that what you usually make. Can you mix one of your clay bodies to my specifications?
Any of our clay bodies can be mixed to your moisture specifications, although there is a 2,000 lb. minimum. If you have a customized mixture for clay you may need to wait until that particular clay body is scheduled to be mixed. Please inquire upon placing your order.
The clay I wanted is out of stock. When will it be made again?
Out of stock clays will typically be mixed within a 3 week period. However, the new stock could be depleted the instant it is made. Please place your order ahead of time so that your clay will be set aside for you once it is made.
I need one of your clay bodies in dry form so I can recycle my clay slop. Do you sell dry mixed clay bodies?
Yes. All of our clay bodies are available in dry form. Dry clay orders may take up to 2 weeks longer because we do not stock a large volume of dry mixed clays. Please call ahead.
I like to have 5 gallon batches of glaze in my studio. Can I buy premixed glazes from you in this volume?
The largest batch of wet mixed glaze we sell is 1 gallon. However, we do sell cone 5-6 glazes in 25 lb. dry mixed batches, which will make approximately 5 gallons of wet glaze. You would just have to mix the dry glaze with water and screen it yourself. We do not sell low fire glazes or underglazes in dry form.
If I give you a recipe, can you mix the glaze for me?
We do not do custom glaze mixing. However, we do carry all the raw materials and equipment you will need to mix it yourself, and our tech can help walk you through the process.
To what temperature should I fire my work?
Always fire your ceramic projects to the cone recommended by the manufacturer for your clay and glaze. Firing too hot or too cold can be disastrous. Also, make sure that the clay and glaze are formulated to be fired at the same temperature.
The clay I am using does not work well with the glazes I have. Can I fix this?
We formulate our clays to work well with most commercial glazes. However, you may find glazes that are not compatible with our clays. Because we do not know the formulas of glazes manufactured by other companies, your only real option is to either switch to another clay, or buy different glazes.
How should I apply my glazes?
Follow the recommendations on the manufacturer’s label. Most commercial glazes are mixed for brushing. Generally, 3 to 4 coats will be necessary. Most commercial glazes can be thinned down slightly with water so you can dip your work instead of brushing.
The glaze I used on my project is very pale and spotty. What did I do wrong?
Your glaze is not on thick enough. Be sure to follow the recommendations on the glaze label. Most glazes require brushing at least 3 coats for good coverage.
My underglaze decoration flaked off after firing. What happened?
The underglaze was applied too thickly. Ideally, underglazes should be applied to greenware, either leather hard or bone dry, and limited to 2 or 3 coats. If you apply the underglaze to bisque ware, it is best to only use one coat. More than one coat can result in flaking.
